Bepantied Man Attacks Goat

A West Virginia man was found clad in a bra and panties standing over the carcass of a neighbor's goat. The man told police he was high on bath salts and "wasn't in his right mind." The 19-year-old was apparently discovered in a bedroom with the dead pygmy goat, which had been stabbed at least once.

FlashNews Closes Its Doors

After 30 years in the weird news business, FlashNews is closing its doors. Founder, Patrick Glynn, said the decline of the business began in the late 1990s with the advent of the Web. Add to that a depressed economy, a decline in radio listeners and opportunities, slashed advertising budgets, and a decline in newspaper subscriptions, and FlashNews can simply no longer afford to do business.

Glynn started the agency in 1980. FlashNews peaked in the early 1990s, providing weird, offbeat news to all of the major late-night talkshows, many morning radio shows, and nearly 1000 media outlets worldwide. Sometimes, the news was "massaged" into being weird, but it was always fun.

FlashNews closed today, 13 days before its 30th anniversary.

The Return of the Son of Bat Boy - The Revenge, Pt. II: The Sequel

American-based tabloid, Weekly World News, has signed with CAA, which will rep the company's 30-odd (and I do mean odd) characters in movie talks. Yes, Bat Boy could very well be coming to a theater near you quite soon! Bat Boy is, by far, the most likely candidate for a movie, TV, or new media deal, as he quickly became the tabloid's poster child after his introduction.

Bat Boy's story was simple - and simply brilliant: In 1992, the puny thing was found in a cave and taken to an undisclosed location where it was studied "and some say abused" by government agents and scientists. Bat Boy escaped time and again and Weekly World News was always on the scene, no matter where it happened.

The headlines from the August 31st, 1999 issue 1 include:
  • Scientists Discover UFO Buried in Desert
  • Divers Come Face-to-Face with Their Dead Dad's Ghost
  • Amazing 'Ostrich Boy' Can Swallow Anything!
Mind you, this was a good decade or so past Weekly World News' heyday. Within a year of this issue, WWN just stopped trying; they jumped the shark with headlines like, "Handyman Patches Hole in Ozone." A few years back, WWN stopped their print periodical, becoming an online-only magazine. Prior to this though, alien babies, Bigfoot babies, resurrecting Kings of Rock n Roll, a tiny Merman, and many more such creations featured prominently. These are now the properties rights-holders are hoping to bring to motion picture.

1 : Pic coming, once I get one of the scanners working. For no good reason, they work fine until unplugged, then the drivers somehow become corrupted or something. It's weird, but this is all pretty old equipment.

Man Has Cake, Eats it Too - DIES!

A man in Wales entered a cake-eating contest at a nightclub... and dies!

An unidentified man, believed to be from Birmingham, collapsed after consuming fairy cakes at the Monkey Cafe and Bar the other night. Patrons and workers there tried to revive him, then contacted authorities, who pronounced him dead. While there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death, no one seems to know why the man keeled-over.

The contest was to raise funds for an art exhibition.

PETA is Crazier Than Britney

This is one of those cross-over posts that kinda fits better over to The Rundown, but since we have discussed PETA and their shithouse-rat-crazy antics here many times before (and will continue to do so in the future), I figured it would be fine to put here. After all, The Rundown has about as much Britney as it can take... and a lot more on the way!

Sooo, PETA sent an open letter to Britney Spears' parents, telling them they believe her behavior is linked to - wait for it! - her meat and dairy intake! No kidding! Follow the link to read the actual letter; this is not a hoax - that is the open letter, hosted on PETA's site!

Of course, PETA is all about saving the animals and Brit-Brit is definitely one party animal (Wooooo!), so now our question is this: when are they going to work on Amy Winehouse?

Cold Snap in Middle East

Snow fell in Baghdad for the first time in living memory.

The Middle East has suffered a very rare cold snap, with temperatures falling as low as -16º in some places. Crops have been damaged and at least 10 people have died. Weather officials are eagerly watching to see if previous record lows will be broken.

There is dissension amongst the experts as to the cause of this unusual weather pattern. some insist it is due to environmental changes, while others disagree. While much has been made about global warming and other environmental concerns as late, weather patterns are known to run in cycles and this may very well just be one of those cycles.

The Death Channel

No matter your satellite or cable TV provider, you know many of the channels are themed - there are sports channels, comedy channels, music channels, and in Germany, a death channel.

Etos TV is the world's first TV station devoted to death and the memory of loved ones now lost. For a nominal fee, it will broadcast "videobituaries" of your loved ones, often set to hymnal music. Wolf Tildman Schneider is the entrepreneur behind Etos TV and he truly believes it is a good idea to help grieving people move on with their lives and put the deaths of their loved ones behind them without forgetting their passing. In addition, Etos TV also has programs and documentaries on cemeteries, bereavement, and other facets related to the funereal.

Etos TV is not a "reality" death station intent on exploiting death for the sake of ratings. But the Church is keeping a close eye on the channel, to make sure "death is not dumbed-down." Death is a fairly taboo subject to the Germans.

Bolivian "Priest" Smuggled Cocaine Under Robes

A man claiming to be a Catholic priest was arrested in Amsterdam trying to smuggle nearly 10 pounds of cocaine under his robes.

When he approached a boarding gate, he refused to allow officials to search him on "religious grounds."  When they noticed him going to a different gate, that immediately seized and searched him, finding 7.7 pounds of cocaine beneath his robes.  Even after arrest, the Bolivian man insisted he was actually a priest.

There are no "religious grounds" which prevent one from being allowed to be searched when entering Europe, according to an official.

Weekend at Virgilio's

A couple of criminals with a past of heroin addiction really needed a fix, so they wheeled their buddy down to the NYC office to cash his social security check. Problem was, their buddy was dead.

An off-duty police officer was enjoying a meal at a local restaurant when he noticed a pair of junkies rolling what he thought was a mannequin down the street in a red office chair. When onlookers began encircling them and making a display, the officer finally decided to see what was going on. He thought it may have been some kind of stunt, but upon closer examination, he realized the corpse in the office chair was very real.

Turns out, the couple had tried to cash Virgilio Cintron's SSI check but when the cashier demanded the recipient be present, the two went back to his apartment, threw his dead body in the chair, and wheeled him on down to the office.

When paramedics arrived, the two feigned surprise, saying, "Oh my God, he's gone?"

NYC Ninja Strikes Again

New York City apparently has a bandit clad in all black roaming the city and he apparently struck again over the weekend, making off with thousands of dollars in jewelry. Aside from his choice of clothing, the thief got his nickname, the ninja bandit, after he brandished a pair of nunchucks in an altercation with a homeowner some months back.

We discussed a similar case involving a Russian who dressed like a ninja and claimed to be emulating his childhood hero, Robin Hood, while back over to The Rundown. One of the main justifications for superhero costumes in comic books has to do with the psychological effect they are supposed to have on their enemies. While these criminals' real motives for their dress is unknown, ninjas have been a mainstay in American pop-culture since the 1980s and the myths surrounding them may have played a part in this thief's decision to dress as he does.

Of course, dressing in all black is just a good idea for a thief, anyway.

Year in Review? This'll Be Quick...

So I was looking back through the different things we've covered this year, as well as over some of the sites we use as sources to recall some of the more eventful paranormal-based happenings this year... and there weren't many.

Sure, some new footprints were found in the Andes which might belong to a Yeti (and by none other than Sci-Fi Channel's Destination Truth) and a prominent Japanese government figure said that he believes alien races and spacecraft "definitely exist" (another insisted that, if Godzilla did, he felt certain the army could handle him), but that was really about it. The long and short of 2007 is that it was largely uneventful. I don't know if this is a good thing or not.

At any rate, I hope everyone had a good new year and that they continue to do so; outside of the paranormal, 2007 kind of sucked for me and just about everyone else I know. It certainly wasn't too kind to most of Hollywood... still, I'm thankful that I'm here for yet another one (so far) and hope that all of you will be too!

I Now Pronounce You Man and Dog

An Indish man has married a dog in hopes of lifting what he thinks is a curse.

33-year old P Selvakumar of the Sivaganga district stoned two dogs to death several years back. Since then, he has gone blind and fallen prey to paralyzation. Selvakumar believes his run of extremely "bad luck" is connected to this incident.

Selvakumar was perfectly healthy 15 years back, but after stoning two dogs to death, his health began to fail. He says he tried every cure imaginable, but nothing helped, so on the advice of astrologers and several others, he decided to marry a dog.

The practice is actually not uncommon in Selvakumar's culture. Superstitious Indians often marry animals in attempts to ward off curses. But it really isn't so far removed from Western society; many of us marry bitches, too.

OH COME ON! You knew it was coming.

A Pack o Petersons

Wow. There’s nothing paranormal or anything about all this, but I just wanted to mention how all these Peterson people seem to be pretty crazy!

Obviously, we all remember the whole Scott and Laci Petersen thing and now his supporters may stand a good chance at getting him a retrial. Now yet another Peterson woman - a Staci Peterson, no less! - has disappeared under very similar circumstances and her husband is, while not yet officially a suspect, certainly being scrutinized for his odd behavior following her disappearance.

Then there’s the story of the teacher [someone] Peterson, who is believed to have absconded to Mexico with her 13-year old “boyfriend.”

There are no connections between any of these people or their stories, it’s just kind of weird how many Petersons are in the news lately.

Weekly World News Ceases Publication

Weekly World News will cease print publication as of its August 27th issue.

American Media Inc. (AMI), also publisher of The National Enquirer, made the announcement this week.  Weekly World News, "The World’s Only Reliable Newspaper," has been in circulation for almost 30 years.  It focused on such stories as Bat Boy, Bigfoot, and aliens.  Of course, most of these were along the lines of Bigfoot babies, alien babies, and... well, Bat Boy.

In recent years, the newspaper dropped its former yellow journalism -- which was almost always just this side of believability -- in favor of completely absurd, (barely) humorous articles, such as "Carpenter Discovers What Put Hole in Ozone," "Merman Caught in South Pacific," and "Al Capone's Ghost Storms White House" (those are actual headlines the paper carried!).

Strangely enough, Weekly World News sometimes actually had real news disguised as junk reporting.  In fact, a few years back, they "scooped" the major media outlets with a doctored pic of Saddam Hussein in a diaper.

AMI said the online version will continue.
