NYC Man Survives 39-Story Fall

A 22-year-old man attempting to commit suicide suffered broken legs and is in critical condition after crashing through the back window of a car and landing in its backseat. The man jumped from a 39th-story ledge. The owner of the car says he believes the Rosary beads he keeps in the car saved the man's life.

St. Santa Rosa Died of Heart Condition

X-ray technology helped researchers determine the death of St. Santa Rosa, a saint of the Catholic Church who is believed to have wielded powers of resurrection, and to have escaped a burning pyre unharmed. The saint's body has lain in-state for 700 years, until experts were asked to help treat and stop damage in the 1990s.

While historical researchers uncovered documents suggesting Santa Rosa may have succumbed to Tuberculosis at, or around, the age of 18, x-ray evidence shows it is more likely to have been a blood clot in the heart. Researchers think Santa Rosa may have been afflicted with Cantrell's Syndrome, a rare heart condition, though more research is needed for confirmation. No trace of TB was found in the saint's body.

Vatican Investigating 'Our Lady'

For nearly three decades now, the faithful in Bosnia-Hercegovina have claimed the Virgin Mary appears daily in Medjugorje; six children first saw the apparition in 1981. The Vatican is now investigating these claims.

The Virgin Mary is said to appear in a gray dress and veil, and sometimes adorned in gold, crowned with stars. She is said to float on a cloud and repeat the same phrase each appearance, always in Croatian: "I've come because there are many true believers here. I wish to be with you to convert and reconcile the whole world."

Many skeptics warn against believing such claims, but some 30 million pilgrims are said to have visited the small town since the vision was first reported.

Parachutist Plunges 10,000' - Expected to Live

A parachutist whose primary and reserve parachutes both malfunctioned during a 10,000' dive landed on the roof of a warehouse and was taken to a local hospital - without any fractures or serious injuries!

While the parachutist's name has yet to be released, he was diving near Shropshire and was filming dives. It is unknown if his terrible plunge was captured, but an eyewitness said "His reserve [parachute] opened fully but was turning when he hit the roof."

The owner of the center said the parachutist was "very lucky." He then noted, "Fire is very hot." We have chosen to withhold his name.

Catholic Church Considering Miracle for Pope John Paul II's Beatification

"I stand before you today and can say, to my mind, Jory is a miracle," Father Art Snedeker told a press conference the other day.  He was talking about Jory Aebly, who sustained a point-blank bullet wound to the head, "execution-style," during a mugging and has made a near-complete recovery.  Aebly and his family, along with Father Snedeker, attribute the miraculous healing to a rosary blessed by Pope John Paul II.

For absolutely no good reason, many Catholics have vied for Pope John Paul II's canonization.  For this to happen, at least two miracles attributed to him have to be documented and verified by the Catholic Church.  So far, the Church has found none, but some are saying Aebly's recovery may be the first.

But one commenter on the ABC news site pointed-out that:
The fact that Pope John Paul II presided over the Catholic Church during its dirtiest scandal since indulgences [sic] (i.e. the pedophile priest sex scandals) and did nothing to stop it really diminishes anything else this man might have done in his lifetime. I wouldn't call that " living a life of heroic virtue."

Grigory Gabovoy Convicted

Self-proclaimed Russian psychic, Grigory Gabovoy, was convicted of fraud last week and sentenced to 11 years in prison.

Gabovoy claimed a number of things, including the ability to teleport, levitate, change the length of his limbs, cure AIDS and other diseases, and raise the dead. He offered to raise the children who died in the Beslan school tragedy -- if paid a large sum of money. This became his MO in later years, as he preyed on surviving relatives of the dead, according to prosecutors.

He was found guilty on 11 separate counts of fraud, including one in which he told a woman he could resurrect her dead children. In all cases, Gabovoy accepted money from the despondent relatives in exchange for his "services" -- services that were never rendered. While Gabovoy did meet with mothers of the children killed in the Beslan terrorist siege and supposedly requested money, none of the cases were tied to that.

Dozens of supporters clamored on the courthouse steps and professed their belief in the self-proclaimed prophet who has said he is the second advent of Christ. At the height of his popularity, Gabovoy drew hundreds.

St. Padre Pio on Display in Italy

St. Padre Pio's body will be on display in Italy to commemorate the 40th anniversary of his death.

St. Padre Pio was said to have had stigmata - a Christian affliction (and paranormal oddity) in which the sufferer bears Christ's wounds, generally manifested in bleeding from the hands and feet and, even more rarely, from the side or head; St. Pio's was said to be on his hands, feet, and side. While his body is well-preserved despite no measures having been taken to achieve this (incorruption, also a Christian paranormal oddity - which fall under the category of miracles here - often associated with sainthood), there is no sign of stigmata. Of course, St. Padre Pio's blood has long stopped flowing.

Beatified in 2002 by Pope John Paul II, Padre Pio had legions of followers before his death - but the Catholic Church was not among them. In fact, Pio was banned from attending or performing public mass. Many thought him a fraud, and several contend that to this very day; one skeptic suggested he used carbolic acid to create his wounds (a pretty ludicrous claim).

Born in 1887 in the village of Pietrelcina in Southern Italy, St. Pio joined the Capuchins at 17 and lived for 11 years as a novice. On September 20th, 1915, he began experiencing severe pains in his side and extremities for which doctors could find no reason nor cause. Exactly three years later, to the date, St. Pio fell to the floor in agony at the altar of the church in Foggia. His fellow monks found him there, unconscious, bleeding from his side, hands, and feet. He bore the stigmata unto his death; no medical efforts healed them and no evidence of imposture was ever found.

Throughout his lifetime, Padre Pio was attributed many miraculous cures, as well as the gifts of precognition and bilocation. Pio rarely left his monastery and died peacefully on September 28, 1968.

Pope Grants Indulgences

Very important historically and religiously, Pope Benedict XVI has authorized special indulgences to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Virgin Mary's appearance at Lourdes to shepherdess, Bernadette Soubirous, in 1858.

The pontiff said that Catholics praying at places of worship dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes from February 2nd to 11th will receive indulgences, as will those visiting the actual site in December of next year. Indulgences reduce the time spent in Purgatory.

They became infamous in the 16th-Century for being sold, as opposed to being earned, which lead to the Protestant reformation.

Bernadette Soubirous claimed to have seen a vision of the Virgin Mary in a cave, which told her she was the Immaculate Conception and that a church should be erected at the site. Authorities tried to force her to recant, but she remained strong and even had further visions throughout the year. Suddenly, a spring emerged from the cave and was reputed to have extraordinary healing powers. Authorities tried to stop the flow of the spring and delay the construction of the church, but the stories reached the French Empress Eugenie, wife of Napoleon III, and construction went forward.

Bernadette Soubirous was beatified in 1925 and canonized in 1933.

Skydiver Survives 32,000' Drop!

Champion paraglider, Ewa Wisnierska, was sucked into a tornadic storm as she and 200 other paragliders began a world paragliding championship in Australia. She was lifted over 32,000 feet into the air (high than Mt. Everest), suffering frostbite and being covered with ice and hail. She lost consciousness due to extreme cold and lack of Oxygen, but then came to at around 7,000m and made contact with her ground team a little while later.

She managed to land herself, comparing it to the landing of Apollo 13, having made contact with her ground crew at around 7,000 feet. They were tracking her via GPS, but were unable to do anything to help her. She was treated at a hospital for frostbite on her face and ears, then released.

Fellow paraglider,
He Zhongpin, a 42-year old chinese man, was not so lucky. Caught in the same storm, he died - presumably due to extreme weather and lack of Oxygen. An autopsy will be performed next week to determine the actual cause of death.
