November 22, 1987 - WTTW Chicago

The general public would be absolutely horrified to know the extent to which modern television and radio has been weaponized to manipulate them.

Some of it can be blamed on time zones, which have also been weaponized to control the flow of information.  Sometimes, signals are relayed or delayed to one specific part of the country while another sees entirely different coverage of the same event.

Such as when only part of America saw WTC7 collapse in 2001.

The footage included interrupted a Dr. Who episode on Chicago's PBS station, WTTW - Channel 11, on November 22nd, 1987.  What appears to be a man in an ill-fitting Max Headroom mask and oversized suit addresses the audience for no discernible reason, saying nothing of apparent import.

He appears to be filming inside of a rental storage unit and to reference Michael Jackson when he places a glove on his hand.  Michael Jackson was arguably the biggest musical star in the world at the time and Max Headroom was a top-rated, dystopian sci-fi TV show in America, as well as a pop-cultural icon who sold everything from Pepsi to sneakers.  It was about the corruption, commercialization, and weaponization of the media.

The video has never been explained and whoever committed this act of piracy has never been caught or identified... publicly, anyway.

This is known as "The Max Headroom Incident."

Joe Rogan, Dave Foley, and Paul Greenberg Discuss the Unexplained

Joe Rogan's Lunch with Erich von Daniken

While you may not be a fan of Joe Rogan, or The Joe Rogan Experience, this brief clip from his podcast featuring Dave Foley and Paul Greenberg delves into many of the topics we explore here to The OddBlog.  Rogan's interest in these subjects is well-known -- he even hosted a SyFy show entitled Joe Rogan Questions Everything in which he explored them.

Rogan's healthy interest is tempered by an equally healthy skepticism, particularly toward the more outlandish.  The clip's title is perhaps misleading, as von Daniken is hardly mentioned during a wide-ranging discussion covering Bigfoot, UFOlogy, lost civilizations, and more.

The Joe Rogan Experience broadcasts live on YouTube irregularly, and features a range of guests covering a wide variety of subjects, including the Unexplained.  He and Dave Foley co-starred in the 1990's TV show, NewsRadio.

Bob Zemeckis' Blue Book Lands at History

Dr. Allen Hynek
Dr. Allen Hynek
The History Channel has changed its name to History and teamed-up with A&E to bring audiences Robert Zemeckis' Blue Book series.  Set in the 1950s and '60s, it follows Dr. Allen Hynek and others involved in the USAF's highly secret Operation: Blue Book.  Blue Book, which went by other names in other incarnations, was the first big study of disinformation campaign surrounding the UFO phenomenon in America.

A speculative, scripted series based on real cases and events, Blue Book is expected to start this season.  Zemeckis is best known for movie classics such as Forrest Gump and Back to the Future.

Admiral Byrd, the Hollow Earth Exploration and UFOs

Hollow Earth Entrance
Hollow Earth Entrance
I'm sure you have all heard some version of the "Hollow Earth Theory" and some of you may have heard of Admiral Byrd, but I am not sure that any of you know the very depths to which this whole theory goes or Byrd's direct involvement in it. I know that I have had a passing familiarity with these topics for years, but this documentary blew my ever-loving mind.

Snag Films is a great site, but an even better Roku station, with thousands of great films and TV shows, and I'll be bringing some other selections from them to light off and on in the future, but this particular documentary is absolutely must-see viewing for any serious Ufologist or Hollow Earth theorist.

Best of all, it's free to watch and you don't have to signup!

Discovery Diversifying, Going Back to Hard Science

The new head of Discovery claims it is "more narrowly niche that it needs to be" and seeks to add more female and younger male viewers. Rich Ross also said he will be shopping for more scripted shows and documentaries.

"I don’t believe you’ll be seeing a person being eaten by a snake during my time," Ross said.
The channel took a lot of heat following a highly-publicized marketing stunt promoting a show in which a man was said to be eaten alive by an anaconda. Discovery has been criticized quite often in the past several years due to the sensationalistic nature of its programming. It has definitely strayed from its original platform.

Fright-Day Nights on The Weirding @ Facebook

The B-Raters
Still Wrong.
Okay, so I freely admit the name is a bit cheesy/cornball, but it's all in good fun. The point of this post is to let you know that we are playing Horror, Supernatural, and Paranormal --themed programming on The Weirding @ Facebook Page on Friday nights. Most of these programs are from Hulu and you can watch them on your computer (though not always on your TV or mobile devices, unfortunately). Then, at midnight, we have a Horror movie.

We've only done it once and I meant to promote here before then but got tied-up with another event and simply forgot. That page is a lot for one person to run by himself but I'm doing what I can!

So please join us and Like and comment on the programs and features you enjoy so I know what to bring you more of. Thanks!

UPDATE:  Fright-Day Nights have been discontinued, and we no longer maintain the Facebook pages.  We still sometimes riff movies, and have four seasons' worth of videos for viewing, though!  Find out more on The B-Raters. - 2018

Video Wall Mounts

If you have a large screen TV or video device, you may need an led video wall mount. Mounts are available in a variety of sizes to fit almost any size TV. They are not inexpensive, though they will definitely make your TV viewing far more enjoyable. I am not certain but you may need one of these in order to watch your television; I do not know how you would stand your TV otherwise. A friend said he custom crafted a cabinet for his.

Paranormal Selections on Roku

If you have Roku, there are several outlets carrying UFO and paranormal themed shows.  In fact, if you check your Channel Store under Special Interest, you will find an entire channel dedicated to these topics.  The channel, Midnight Pulp, also has several documentaries and specials dedicated to such diverse topics as the occult, aliens, and Bigfoot.  It carries some (fictional) horror flicks featuring these subjects, as well.

UFOs & Aliens on Roku

Roku has a new channel featuring reports of aliens and UFOs.  I have not actually sampled the channel myself, though I do have access to it, as I was excited enough to share the information first. You can find the new channel in your Channel Store under "Special Interests." To add it, simply click on the channel and select "Add Channel."

Roku is basically a router/modem for your TV which allows you to view Internet stations on your TV. It is available at most general stores for around $60 as well as online.

Grant Wilson Leaving Ghost Hunters

Grant Wilson has said he is leaving the Ghost Hunters show to pursue other things in his personal life. The split was amicable, with SyFy executives saying the show would "reshape itself as it moves forward" in his absence. There will be no new lead to replace him on the show.

Grant Wilson co-founded TAPS with Jason Hawes back in the 1990s. Ghost Hunters has run for eight seasons on SyFy.

Unnatural History on Hulu

If you're looking for some free paranormal TV, then look no further: Hulu has four episodes (probably the only four) of Unnatural History. The show takes a look at paranormal concepts like witches and vampires, Bigfoot, and more. Hulu offers free TV shows like this one, and you can sign-in with your Facebook account or create an account there.

Dutch Men Eat Each Other on TV

Two television presenters for the program Guinea Pigs underwent surgery so they could taste one another's prepared flesh. One had meat removed from his buttock, while the other had a piece of meat removed from his stomach. The meat was then cooked and served with a side of asparagus.

While some are calling the show a hoax, the broadcasting company and presenters disagree. However, both said they had their fill of human flesh and would not do the stunt again because it would involve more surgery.

Mythbusters Misfires

During the taping of a segment for the popular Discovery show Mythbusters, a cannon lifted during firing, launching the cannonball through a residential neighborhood and into a minivan. The show's producers are already meeting with insurance carriers and agents to pay for the damages to several homes, as well as the minivan. In one instance, the cannonball raced through a bedroom where three people slept.

No one was hurt in the misfire.

Ghost Adventures - Bonnie Springs Ranch

Bonnie Springs Ranch in Blue Diamond, Nevada, was built in the 1960s on top of a trail that was a stop-over for travelers heading to the west coast in the 1800s.  Traveling the old Spanish trail was an extremely dangerous task.  Numerous travelers died from attacks, sickness, and exposure to the elements.

The travelers went through a lot of mental, physical, and emotional pain which could explain the odd occurrences that frequently happen at Bonnie Springs today.  Recent visitors and investigators have reported hearing voices, odd feelings -- one even left with large scratches down her back!

One witness, who has worked around the ranch for 30 years, claims he once saw the merry-go-round on the playground spinning on its own.  As he approached the merry-go-round to get a better look, it came to a sudden, dead stop!  This experience, and many more, have convinced him that there is a strong spiritual force at the Bonnie Springs Ranch.

Ghost Adventures - Return to the Goldfield Hotel

This Friday, Zak, Nick, and Aaron return to a place that is notorious among Ghost Adventures fans: Goldfield, Nevada, is where Zak and Nick conducted one of their first investigations.  The Goldfield Hotel is where they caught the infamous clip of a flying brick.  Since that day, Zak and Nick have always wanted to return to the location of their very first ghost adventure.

However, the Goldfield Hotel is not all about warm memories.  There are former workers who are terrified to enter the premises.  During the pre-lockdown investigation, a former custodian admits to Nick that she was recently attacked in her home by a spirit that she believes followed her from the hotel.

She also believes the attack was a warning for Zak, Nick, and Aaron.

The building has more than its share of dark history: The hotel's owner, George Wingfeild, was one of the most powerful men in Nevada during California's historical Gold Rush.  He is famous for operating a mining company in Goldfield, but also infamous for his crimes.  Wingfeild kept a young prostitute named Elizabeth hostage in the hotel while she was pregnant with his child.  Shortly after giving birth, both Elizabeth and her child were found dead.  Many people still believe Elizabeth and her baby were murdered by George Wingfield.

Though the Ghost Adventures crew are very excited to return to Goldfield, they are also worried, because the spirits have had six years to plan for their return.  This is definitely an episode you don't want to miss!

Ghost Adventures - Pico House Hotel

The Pico House Hotel in Los Angeles has seen everything from lavish parties to a bloody race riot at it's doorstep. The building's history reaches back to before Los Angeles was a part of the United States. The Ghost Adventures crew will team up with the Hollywood Ghost Hunters to tackle the Pico House Hotel's dramatic history. Kane Hodder ("Jason"), R.A. Mihailoff ("Leatherface"), and stuntman Rick McCallum join Zak, Nick, and Aaron for the very first paranormal lockdown at this hotel.

In 1880, a shootout between Chinese gangs resulted in the death of an anglo police officer. There were already strong racial tensions in the community and the accident fueled the fire. What resulted was a bloody, racially-charged riot that led to the deaths of 19 people right in front of the Pico House Hotel. The angry and violent energy from that riot continues to have an effect on the hotel today.

One guard recalls hearing noises on the floor below him. As he walked down the stairs to investigate the noise, he was violently kicked in the back by an unseen force. He promptly quit his job the next morning.

Maybe Jason from Friday the 13th and Leatherface from Texas Chainsaw Massacre III can draw these violent spirits out to play.

Ghost Adventures - Kell's Irish Pub

Aaron
Aaron at Kell's Irish Pub
This week, the Ghost Adventures crew investigates Kell's Irish Pub in Seattle.

In the early 1900s' Seattle, death was a good business; mining accidents, disease, and murder made it very profitable.  E.R. Butterworth opened Seattle's first morgue in the midst of an outbreak of a deadly disease.  At the time, there were so many deaths, the City of Seattle paid citizens for each body that was brought to the morgue.  Since the payment was about half a year's salary for many, it quickly became an incentive for murder.

Today, Kell's Irish Pub occupies what used to be the morgue.  The restless souls that passed through the walls continue to have an effect on the building today.  Figures walk the halls, glasses move on their own, and voices echo throughout the building.

Every year, there seems to be a build-up of paranormal activity as we move closer to the anniversary of Seattle's Spanish influenza outbreak of 1918.  Due to the number of deaths, it was mandatory for everyone to wear surgical masks in public. Thousands of bodies passed through the mortuary as a result of disease, accidents, and foul play, but E.R. Butterworth didn't care if the bodies were there as a result of natural causes or murder.

Zak, Nick, and Aaron believe the souls of those who died for unjust reasons remain trapped in Kell's Irish Pub.
