Erich von Daniken is largely credited for the ancient astronauts theory. He made his rather rambling, but not entirely meritless, case in a series of three books. Chariots of the Gods was the first, and most successful, of von Daniken's series.

The book was made into a film and, although successful, it varies somewhat from the book and fails to convincingly present a cogent case. It is thought-provoking (though dated), and worth a watch for those interested in the ancient astronauts theory.

Erich von Daniken's Chariots of the Gods movie was released in 1970.

Nazca Lines in Danger

In Peru, anyone who occupies a parcel of land for more than a day has to be systematically evicted, a process that can take up to two years or longer. This is the problem facing archaeologists and preservers of the Nazca Lines, as squatters have moved into the area. Experts say they have already destroyed a Nazca-era cemetery and are encroaching on several of the figures.

One of the squatters denied all of this, including the existence of the Nazca lines (they are famously only visible from the air). Authorities say they receive nearly 200 reports of encroachment each year -- a stiff number when compared to the the handful of cases nearby countries receive.

Ancient Peruvian Pyramid Spotted

Approximately a mile from Cahuachi, believed to be the largest mud city known, researchers discovered the outline of what may be another pyramid adobe just below the surface of the ground.

Using new remote sensing technology, the image was found among those taken by satellites in the area. The pyramid spotted appears to be nearly 100,000 square-feet and its architecture is said to resemble that of the Grand Pyramid. 

Cahuachi was the capitol of the Nazca empire. The Nazca lines are a world-renowned set of images on the desert floor, visible only from the air. No one knows how nor why they were made.

Researchers believe this pyramid, like the others, may contain the remains of human sacrifices.
