Busy IRL and in Azeroth

I know posts have been sparse lately and I am solely to blame, however I am back in physical therapy at the moment and am co-GM of a guild in World of Warcraft. Even if you discount the latter as anything less than one of the most important undertakings of my adult life, PT is scheduled twice a week and I have been going for the last three or four weeks. I have about the same number of weeks ahead of me before I am done.

I am having to do seemingly mundane exercises that would not faze the average person but can be excruciating for me. There is a lot of heat, some electricity, and a little massage involved, but it is mostly heat and exercises. While the whole thing has loosened me up a lot, there are days when I am feeling just fine until after my PT visit.

I am still keeping an eye on interesting stories I come across and will eventually get back to posting more regularly but aside from the more frequent medical appointments I am facing, I am now co-GM of a new guild in World of Warcraft. Ours has a little roleplaying flair, or so I have been told, thanks to some clever details I and other members have insisted upon including. Part of my job includes maintaining the guild vault, which is no mean feat. In fact, today I have to completely restructure and reorganize this behemoth and I expect the process to take several hours.

As always, The OddBlog is still kicking, still going strong, it has just taken a backseat to other things right this moment. But I am not about to forget it, nor you great readers, and will be back periodically to bring you news of the weird, inexplicable, and downright bizarre. And, once my medical situation has cleared-up some, I should be back to posting regularly. Thanks for reading!

Sick

Sorry guys (and gals), but I am very sick. I live in an area where they have taken the medications off the shelves and made them unavailable, due to abuse. You are supposed to be able to get them by signing a ledger with your driver's license and personal information, but the area stores refuse to stock it because they are afraid of break-ins. Obviously, a lack of police initiative and responsibility is to blame, as there are over 31 officers in this 20-mile county, so coverage is not to blame.

Regardless, I am sick as a dog and will be back to posting regularly as soon as I can. For now, enjoy the story or two I am about to bring you, then hit the archives for several years' worth of great posts on the Unknown and the Unexplained.

Injured

Sorry, but I hurt myself walking. I slipped on a game box and busted my knee and lip well enough that it's taken a while to heal. It has already been a week, if that gives you some idea. I'm still busted-up pretty good.

Trouble Sleeping

Got a new kitten and she's keeping me up all night long! It's been a good two weeks since I got a full night's sleep and it's catching-up to me. She's also driving my other cat nuts with her constant playfulness. Honestly, this is the most playful kitten I have ever seen. I love it, but it's only a blast for so long... and I'm starting to get over it.

Anyway, just wanted to stop by and let you know that I'm still here, just having a tough time getting going and staying there. I'll try to do better in coming weeks, as I'm going to buy some herbal supplement to help me sleep... and hope it works!

Explaining My Absence

I chronicle a lot of inexplicable mysteries here, but my absence can be explained fairly succinctly (though I tend to ramble, so don't expect it):

We had a record number of storms here this year and it rained for days and days and days over the course of many weeks time and again over the last seven months. The electricity went out for days at a time not once but twice, and I got out of the habit of sitting in front of the computer blogging. When I got back into it, I developed a serious cramp in my back, but I pressed on for a few more weeks.

It was in May when the cramp spread and became so unbearable that I was forced to seek medical attention. If you've ever been through something like this, you know how it goes: Your doctor does jackshit but make an appointment for you with a "specialist" who does jackshit but send you for round after round of x-rays, MRIs, and exams. Months after your original appointment, you might get some help, but more than likely, you'll be told to "rest" or "drink more water" or something equally banal that simply means, "We aren't going to prescribe you the medicine you need because other people abuse it, you look like you might abuse it, or we don't get incentives to do so."

Anyway, I'm back in pain management and it took several months, several doctors, and countless phonecalls to get me back there. I lost innumerable hours, countless dollars, one primary care physician, and am actually on anti-anxiety medicine now (that's true, though it isn't all because of this debacle). But I am getting the help I need -- at least the help my insurance provides -- so I'm hoping to be back to regular posting soon. But, again, this has only just begun; I'm nowhere near 100% and nothing is certain, so I can only be hopeful at this point.

But The OddBlog is going on five years old, so there's more than enough oddities and cryptozoology to keep you reading until things get back to normal.

And, as always, thank you for reading!

Back

So sorry guys! I had a really bad... something with my stomach and am still not certain what's wrong. Changes were made to my medicine, which may well have been to blame, but I fear I may have an ulcer. I'm not certain what it is, but it made last week terribly uncomfortable for me, so I did as little work as possible (which is nothing new). Then I had a birthday and there was a holiday, so I took that extra time-off just to relax.

But I'm back for now -- again, still fighting the stomach thing, so -- I may be off and on for the next week or two, but I'll be cranking-out posts at least through to the weekend.

Winds, the Red Sea, Religion, and Science

There have been several stories regarding religion and science lately, from Stephen Hawking's "M-theory" and denial of God, to a study which portends that a high wind could have parted the Red Sea, allowing the Jews to escape Egypt, as told in the Book of Exodus. But the thing which sticks-out most in my mind has nothing to do with the how but the why: The Big Bang and high winds may be the mechanics by which these things occurred, but their timing seems pretty spectacular.

Granted, the Jews trekked through the desert for some 40 years, but it was only when they were trapped between the sea and the Pharaoh's advancing forces that a mysterious high wind rose, blowing throughout the night, to part the waters for their escape. Just as ominously, once the Jews had made their way across, the wind died, and the waters rushed in to kill the pursuing army.

I freely accept that this wind has some rational, scientific explanation; what remains mysterious, to me, is its timing. A wind that arises at just the right time, then disappears at an even more propitious one, seems to defy any scientific rationale. The question then, for me, is one of mind over matter vs. an unseen, guiding force: Did Moses' own desire, perhaps augmented by his followers' same desire, call forth this wind, or did a deity(s) provide it in response?

That it was coincidental is idiotic. The idea that, given a long enough timeline, anything is possible is, in this particular case, even more idiotic. I think of these arguments the way skeptics and atheists think of those who insist, "It was God. The end." And though I do see the formers' point, I find it lazy to simply assume it was one or the other, no middle ground allowed.

Most Occult ideology maintains that the actual forces involved are very natural; it is the Occultist's desire, or communication with unseen forces, that are the catalyst. There is no mere "wishing" things into, or out of, existence. In the story of Moses parting the Red Sea, the wind is how the waters were parted, but the wind would never have blown there, at that time, were it not for Moses' desire for it to do so. Let us not forget that in Moses' time, there were magicians who could rival his "miracles."

Many Occultists have long held that the only difference in Occult "magick" and religious "miracles" is the name, itself. And Christians are the ones who created this separation, just as they absorbed many of the world's religions and superstitions while rejecting their related deities. Along the same lines, many "Spiritualists" maintain that the central figure in almost all of the world's major religions are actually the same deity; Allah is God is the Great Spirit, etc.

While these scientific investigations and hypotheses are always interesting and welcome, science and religion are not mutually exclusive -- except to scientists and zealots -- and that bears mentioning once in a while.

Another Apology

I hate writing these things, I really do - even worse, I hate running back through the blog later and seeing them all! At any rate, you deserve to know why it's been so spotty lately and it's the same as the last few times I've written this notice: I just had surgery. That's it, that's all.

I know regular readers, especially those who have been with us the last few years (even off and on), know all about my medical issues - it's largely "just" my neck, but it's a nerve issue, so it's basically painful... just, everywhere. I got the surgery done and it's been really touch-and-go for the last few weeks, which is why things have been so spotty here.

Anyway, there's nothing new to report, I just wanted to remind regular readers and new ones alike that I'm still recovering and ask that you bear with me (hopefully) just a little longer.

All Sorts of Problems

Sorry ab out this week, guys. For one thing, I am not feeling well. Yes, it's because of the surgery, but I also think it's a bit to do just with everything - a little run-down, bored, anxious for this whole recovery process to be over and done with, etc.

Also, Blogger has been having problems all week long. Sometime last week or so, I noticed a new option above - Edit Pages - which I have yet to mess with, but I'm sure allows me to now add pages like in WP. I'll be doing that one of these days. In the meantime however, I was trying to - you know - like, post entries and things? I keep getting a 404 (Page Not Found) error, and have been since last week!

It's really maddening and anti-productive: you write entire posts only to find they haven't been saved and you can't recover them because the fucking "auto-save" feature isn't working either, so you're forced to rewrite the entire thing! If you try to save your work as you go, it closes the whole post and you have to surf back to the Dashboard and reopen the thing. REALLY frustrating, extremely time-consuming, and pointless.

Add this to my feeling bad to begin with and I just haven't been able to do much. Anyway, I have an entire week to catch-up on here, so there should be a lot of stuff headed your way this weekend. I can make no promises about next week, though - heck, I can't make any promises about this weekend! The truth is that I'm still feeling under the weather, so...

Surgical Update

This Friday marks one month since my surgery. The good news is that I am feeling better; the bad news is that it's still pretty touch-and-go. I'm hoping things start getting back to normal soon, but I can make no promises at this moment.

The OddBlog has tons of great posts in our archives, so be sure to check them out while you wait for new content!

Zelda Rubinstein's Psychic Connection with Death

I almost hate to post this because I know how it sounds to skeptics - even some believers - but regular readers know I don't lie or exaggerate claims like these, and it's really no earth-shattering thing, so take it for what it's worth:

Zelda Rubinstein, best known for her work as the psychic investigator in the Poltergeist franchise, died this Wednesday, January 27, at 76. In her IMdB biography, a story is related concerning the death of her mother, which happened while she was at a photo shoot for Poltergeist III. According to the story, Rubinstein "bolted" in-place at one point. It was extreme enough that the director noticed it and asked her what was wrong, to which the actress replied, "...it was just a jolt. I'm fine."

A few minutes later, someone informed the director, Gary Sherman, that Zelda Rubinstein was to be released from the set, as her mother had just died. Once the shots were developed, all came out fine except for one, in which "an inexplicable cloud of light" curled-in from the left, obscuring the actress in a "semi-transparent haze." Later, Rubinstein said she knew the incident had been the passing of her mother, and likened their relationship to that of "identical twins," who are often said to possess a psychic bond. Sherman had to agree.

The Poltergeist series is popularly said to be cursed.

But this is where it gets weird:

I had planned to post her obituary on The Rundown (see link above) almost two weeks before it happened!

I had surgery on January 5th and was still heavily-medicated at this time, so I was definitely in an altered-state of consciousness, but certainly was not actively trying to predict the future, telepathically connect with anyone, or anything like that. However, I came across news of her death somewhere online and made a note to report it - in fact, I made several notes to report it before Rubinstein actually died, as I kept forgetting! Over a week ago, I watched one of her last films, Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon, and made yet another note to write her obituary!

Zelda Rubinstein died the day before yesterday!

Zelda Rubinstein had been hospitalized for a few months prior to her death. It is very, very possible that some website incorrectly reported her death, and that is what I honestly believe happened because I really did read her obituary almost two weeks before she died, even if it was in a dream or some half-assed "hallucination" brought upon by medication. However, the very fact that seeing her in that movie several days later reminded me of her passing proves that this was at least a full week before she actually died!

Though I do not completely discount the notion that Zelda Rubinstein may have had some sort of psychic connection with death or that I might very well have suffered some sort of Psi-related event while in an altered-state of consciousness (drugged).

Apologies for Spottiness

I know these last few weeks have been a mess - I haven't been here often, then I drop like a dozen posts in two hours - and I apologize for that, but I am still recovering from surgery and making-up for all the time I've lost to recovering from surgery (so far). I am doing much better than I was, but I did suffer a setback at the end of last week, so although things are going well, I don't expect them to even-out anytime real soon.

I am also redesigning the other blogs across the site. The OddBlog is not included in this project; I like the way it looks, and I hope you do too (suggestions and comments are always welcome!) though a few minor changes will be made over the next few weeks - you probably won't even notice them.

Update

It hasn't quite been two weeks since my surgery and I am still recovering. I actually get to take my first shower since January 4th today! I've had to wash carefully the last few weeks and I'm dirty and icky-feeling. I still hurt pretty badly on a fairly regular basis, but I feel I should be back up and running by next week. If not, I'll be sure to let you know.

I'm sorry I haven't been able to bring you the Ghost Adventures spots the last few weeks, but promise to get back on them regularly as soon as I'm able to post regularly again. Thanks for continuing to visit and I'll see you soon!

Sick

Hi guys. Just a note to let you know I got sick Thursday night. I hadn't been feeling very well for a few days, but I was just a little rundown. I took a nap that afternoon and woke-up vomiting. It was really forceful and lasted well into Friday morning. I missed a whole lot of appointments and stuff, but what could I do?

Anyway, I'm feeling stronger and all, but I'm still not 100%. If I still feel bad, I'll go to the doc's Monday. Hopefully, things will be back to normal next week.

Appointments Yet to Come

As regular readers know, my health took a turn for the worse late last year. I have a chronic condition which comes with a whole lot of pain - too much pain to bear on some days - and it can be debilitating. A lot of it depends on the weather, which was wet and cold throughout the majority of December. Further complicating matters were the holidays, which stretched the length of time between these appointments, as well as the distance to my doctors' offices (about 2 1/2 hours).

Today, I had a round of MRIs and a follow-up on my wrist. Thankfully, the wrist deal appears to be behind us. While the specialist said these things tend to reoccur, and put me on a "need to see" basis, the swelling has gone down visibly and the pain is far more intermittent (though about as severe). The neck thing... well, that's an ongoing problem which will only get worse.

The decision my doctor has to make now is the approach: do I need surgery or is it treatable with pain management, physical therapy (PT), et.al. Unfortunately, all I got on that front is a CD o' my wrinkled matter (further up, dude - I mean my brain!). So I can't tell you much now, but I'll keep you posted (ha!).

And since I've been on the road since about 6:00am, I'll leave you with a history of cryptozoology.

Update

Well, the surgery was a success - at least so far. I just haven't been able to blog because of the pain and the unnaturally large cast. I had a really good picture showing it in relation to my other arm, but I've lost it between computers and folders, so the included pic will have to do for now. I think you can see what I'm getting at.

I go back Wednesday for the doctor to check on things. I don't know what comes next, but hopefully he'll give me something a little more manageable. I plan to be back in the saddle sometime next week, though I'm making no promises as to when.

In the meanwhile, I am posting and scheduling them to pop-up throughout the week. I can only do one here and there, but you won't be able to tell when they've been written or anything; you'll see them as though they were just written. My plan is to push through the pain today and tomorrow and get far enough ahead that I can do maybe 1-2 each day and keep things going until I am back to full-capacity.

I am also working on some of the technical stuff which - as I tell you repeatedly - isn't obvious to you, but makes things run smoother and easier. It's these little details so many tend to overlook which I believe makes us stand-out; you don't know exactly why it's so good, you just know it is - it works better, runs smoother, and looks cleaner than others. And that's because I really am always working on it to make sure of that.

Anyway, I'll get a few things out to you the next few days and we'll take it from there.

BlogCharm Went Under - This is It

If you ever read the original OddBlog (it was called The Weirding, then), you visited a hivesite called BlogCharm. As I wrote before, one of the reasons I moved the blog here is because BlogCharm ripped me off.

Well, I am happy to report that BlogCharm no longer exists!

This is not really "odd" news, as I am sure if they ripped me off, they must have done as much to others. I just wanted to note it because we still appear in some of the search engines as being on BlogCharm and we obviously are not. Plus, it's a bit o' OddBlog history - or OddBloggery, if you like.

Weekend Warrior

Okay guys, this is the last time I'm going to post on this until I know more. However, I told you yesterday that I was going to take the blog down today and try to fix the feed, situate the tags, and do some other stuff, so I wanted to fill you in on what's going on:

I am going to wait until this weekend to do this. The reasoning is simple: hits fall off on the weekends and it will give me two, solid days to do everything I want to accomplish without having to worry too much about turning-away new readers. We don't get a whole lot of hits in general here anyway, so it will be the best thing all the way around.

Again, you shouldn't have any problem accessing what's already been published in general, but there won't be anything new after tomorrow/early Saturday. Then, at some point (once all the work is done), I am going to delete the entire directory tree containing the blog and republish it completely from scratch. You obviously will not be able to access it during this time.

If everything goes well, this shouldn't be any longer than an hour at the very most; if things do not go well... well, we're all computer-users - you know what that means. Still, it shouldn't take that long and once we're back up, everything should be much, much smoother and the RSS feed should be working again.

Thanks!

A Sort-Of Apology

Hey guys, I just wanted to kind-of apologize for the utter lack of activity these past few weeks. As all the American readers know (let's be honest - not too many readers in general, these days), both holidays came at the first of the week, which meant (basically) four-day holidays for most, but my personal hell is that the places around here are only open 1/2-days on both Wednesdays and Saturdays, which resulted in my basically having to run roughshod to try and contact businesses and so forth the entire week! Both holidays crept-up on me and by the time I realized they were here, I was further shocked to find out they were at the start of the week, so I totally put like one or two things off one day and woke up the next to find out that I wasn't going to be able to get anything accomplished for two fucking weeks!

Not to mention I have been waiting for two deliveries for literally three weeks now, so I have been afraid to leave the house! Partially because I don't want to miss the delivery guy, but also because I'm at least 100% positive one of the assholes who lives in the complex would steal anything they found left outside my door. I'm left to hope that I would need to sign for whatever arrives and I have not heard back from any of the companies...

I mean, I love the holidays, but it is kind of ridiculous, you know?

Anyway, I had a pretty good Christmas, as I hope all of you did as well, and this is like the third day in a row I've been drinking (with at least one more to go), so the New Year looks good from the bottom of this glass (knock wood)...

A few "odd" news stories cropped-up over the holidays, but nothing paranormal in nature, nor newsworthy enough to report, really. Oh! I met a Sasquatch... at least I'm pretty sure it was a Sasquatch; she was tending bar in Decatur County, TN.

Anyway, I am thinking of combing through search engines to find some of the New Year's traditions and superstitions to bring you... you know, that's sort of the thing with this blog, as I've said before: if you really care to know these things, you can find them out on your own, even if you do have to spend a lot of time and money to do so, so it's kind of nice to have one place where you can go to just get the overall "gist" of certain weird topics without having to do a lot of work on your own. And to those ends, I honestly try to bring you insightful and fairly replete coverage of such things. Lately, I've been spinning a lot of plates and had a lot of personal stuff to deal with as well, so it hasn't been as easy. Hopefully, all of that will be well out of the way very, very soon, and we'll see what comes out of the rest of this.

Thanks for reading and here's to you and yours!

Is the World a Worse Place?

This is nothing new and I have discussed it both here, as well as over to The Rundown, several times before, but this being the holiday season - and due to some personal betrayals lately - it has been weighing on my mind:

Is the world a worse place today than it was in the past? I mean, is there something failing in our general cultural and social values, especially in America?

I realize we don't necessarily throw Christians to the lions and so forth; we have cutlery, microwaves, computers and the Internet, blahblahblah; but I am not talking about technological or similar advances. Life is more convenient, in many ways easier, but that isn't what this is about. I think people today are angrier and more violent than they have been in the last several generations. Or, maybe it's just that there has been a recent dearth of true humanitarian and philosophical advancements to offset Man's nature?

I have spent a lot of time wrestling with this whole concept. Previously, this anger and violence seemed to be aimed at specific people/groups - Jews, Christians, black Americans, homosexuals - and still is, but there is a general anger and hatred nowadays, a blanket frustration with everything that seems always on the verge of erupting into violence. So, to some extent, it can be argued that nothing much has changed, but I remain steadfast in my opinion that the world is just a worse place now than before.

In the past, this anger and hatred was somewhat contained, or at least controlled. Anger, violence, hatred, frustration, and open hostility seem omnipresent across the board today; it appears in popular entertainment, religious beliefs, politics - it's everywhere. Everyone has some group or belief system they "hate" and everyone finds some reason(s) to be offended whenever possible. And instead of encouraging people to work through this, society is actively supporting their "right" to be angry, to be offended, to "vent" their frustrations and confront their offenders and so on.

And yes, venting your anger and frustration is far healthier than denying and suppressing it, but I think the real problem is that society is supporting peoples' right to feel negative, without offering any positive outlets or solutions. We have become a society that validates negative feelings without putting them into context or defining how to handle them. This has lead to an overly litigious, consistently violent society which has become obsessed with finding joy in in others' human frailties.

And while I am specifically talking about America, it's obvious from a quick scan of any day's world news and events that this applies generally to the entire globe.

Of course, I like to at least try to suggest some solution when I discuss a problem, and that's my suggestion: let's try harder to develop, popularize, and promote healthy, positive outlets for this widespread anger and frustration. We can't rely on the courts, nor any legal or political system to do so; such factions in America are concerned solely with profiting from others' bad choices.

I really am going to do my part, because I have been increasingly frustrated and angry lately, and I need to find more constructive ways to not only express these feelings (blogging really is a good way, for me, to express this anger, but it doesn't change anything) but get rid of them somehow - find some way to channel them into something positive and hopefully constructive.

So look forward to more posts along these lines in coming months.
