L.J. Wilson of Nashville, TN reported having seen several white spots on the face of Mars in 1911. The spots were seen near the region of Hesperia. The account was carried by the magazine, Nature.
In December of 1911, a Prof. Luther of the Dusseldorf Observatory claimed to have witnessed "half of the disc of Mars nearest the Moon" turn green. The Professor theorized it must have been due to a lunar event, but made no claims beyond that.

Mars Tells Satellite "Have a Nice Day"
Obviously a natural formation (most likely made of rocks), the image was taken from the NASA website, so there should be no copyright problems with my reprinting it here.
The image comes just a few weeks after someone on the Web noted a Bigfoot-like figure on the surface, also taken by satellite. That image appears to also be a natural rock formation. But that did not dissuade several rednecks from coming forth to "admit" they were asked to wear a suit, fly to Mars, and pose for the shot.

Bigfoot on Mars?
One space-enthusiast was looking through pictures of Mars returned by one of the rovers when he made an interesting discovery.
Barely a pinprick in the original photo, once blown-up, it appears to show a humanoid form on the surface. While many skeptics insist it is simply a rock formation (which it truly does appear to be), others have noted the similarity to pictures of Bigfoot... and there is a resemblance!
Definitely worth a look, but ultimately nothing will come of it... except the inevitable cable shows.

Men on Mars
NASA released tentative outlines for a manned Mars mission to take place within the next "few decades."
A skeleton crew on a 30-month round-trip mission would leave in a nearly 500 ton spacecraft for the Red Planet. The ship would be built in low-Earth orbit using Ares V, heavy-lift, launch rockets.
To leave in February 2031, the estimated cost would be $20-450 billion. That's... a very broad estimation, I'll say.
The astronauts would have means of growing their own fruits and vegetables, and would use nuclear energy to power their habitat. Air and water would be recycled by "closed-loop" life support systems. Their re-supply and operation-aborting options would be very limited, so they would have to be good mechanics -- possibly to the extent that they would know how to manufacture their own parts.
The moon may be used to test some of these radical ideas.
