Although I had trouble confirming this, at least one source claims Prince Peter Urusov once purchased the entirety of the Black Sea.
On their honeymoon voyage, his wife's ring slipped into the sea. Recalling a family superstition that such a loss could result in a loss of his bride, Prince Urusov (spellings vary) purchased both shores from hundreds of landowners, costing upwards of $40mn. He assumed that this constituted ownership of the entire Black Sea, thus securing his marriage.
Following the Prince's death, his heirs sold the property for twice the amount he paid! The ring, however, was never recovered.
