In 1869, Francisco de Amaral Varella claimed to have seen a gigantic worm on the banks of the Rio das Caveiras. The earthworm-like creature was said to be three feet wide with a piglike snout. Francisco called to his neighbors and the worm disappeared, leaving three-foot wide furrows that were quite deep.
