New Carnivore Discovered

Researchers in Madagascar discovered a previously unknown carnivorous mammal they named Durrell's vontsira, in honor of conservationist, Gerald Durrell. The creature was first spotted in 2004, and a dead specimen was sent for study in 2005. Researchers say it is related to the brown-tailed vontsira, but has several differences.

Durrell's vontsira lives in Madagascar's largest lake, which is threatened by pollution and invasive species, and considered extremely rare. Researchers say it may be one of the most endangered species on the planet.
