Tim Peeler of Cleveland County lives right beside the South Mountain State Park, which is one of the least developed recreational areas in North Carolina. Peeler says he heard screeching and grunting sounds in the early morning of June 5th, so came outside to check on his dogs. That is when he claims to have encountered a 10'-tall man with yellowish-blond hair and a long beard and "tough-talked" him off the property, though the creature later returned. Peeler claims the creature, which he assumes to be a Bigfoot, had six fingers on each hand.
Reporters note that there were several reports of a Bigfoot-type creature between 1978 and 1979, as well. At that time, residents reported seeing a black-haired creature which walked on two feet. Hunts were conducted and large prints were found, but the sightings suddenly stopped in 1979. One theory of the time held that it was a panther.
